Initially, Brazil’s stance was criticized by the United States (USA). North American authorities rejected the Brazilian diplomacy proposal presented on October 18. US representatives at the UN warned that the text validated by Vieira was not aimed at Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks.

Unable to approve any resolution, Brazil says goodbye to the presidency of the UN Security Council without changing its stance in relation to Hamas. The country continues without recognizing the extremist group as terrorist who attacked Israeli civilians.

In a session held this Monday, the 30th, Vieira stated that the UN was “shamefully failing” in the face of what he classified as a “humanitarian catastrophe”. In addition to being based on figures released by the Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip, which is under the control of Hamas, he criticized the collegiate itself.

“Since the last time I spoke to this council, last week, the count of child deaths has increased by a thousand,” said the Brazilian chancellor, at this Monday’s UN session. “Meanwhile, the Security Council holds meetings and listens to speeches, without being able to make a fundamental decision: to end human suffering.”
