“Monument to myself” is the work chosen for the cover of Eugenio Alberti Schatz’s catalog just published with a monographic issue of the magazine Segnature. But not only. It could also be the title of the publication. And already choosing whether the monument is just the work or the set of works in the catalog indicates the vertigo, the game and the irony of it all.
We therefore start with a grid, it could be the wall of a canary’s cage, with the plate well positioned in the center indicating the title. But it is also part of the work that literally speaks to us like this. And it is described as a monument, in fact. But lightly. A commonly used object that the word transforms. Generating estrangement.
Alberti Schatz, who has the benefit and branch of a multiple culture, from Odessa, from Milan, and also Russian thanks to his mother, the poet and artist Evelina Schatz, is not an ordinary artist (He describes himself as “almost an artist”) . He is also a writer, curator, critic, traveler.
