Stoltenberg promised to send Russia written security proposals soon

NATO will soon send its written proposals in response to Russia’s demands for security guarantees, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. The proposals involve serious arms control negotiations and transparency measures, Mr. Stoltenberg said.

“In the near future we will pass on our written proposals to Russia, we made it clear to them,” the NATO Secretary General said (quoted by Reuters). As part of the proposal, the organization will declare its readiness for serious arms control negotiations and measures to achieve greater transparency regarding military activities and the deployment of missiles.

“Last week, NATO Allies and Russia met at the Russia-NATO Council, and NATO Allies are ready to meet again to make concrete proposals, submit written proposals and achieve constructive results. Today I invited all members of the Russia-NATO Council to a series of meetings,” said Jens Stoltenberg at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that Moscow would decide on the advisability of further work with the United States and NATO after written responses to draft agreements on security guarantees. The ambassador noted that the discussions held with the US and NATO have not yet yielded any significant results. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov in an interview with CNN noted that the parties still managed to reach some agreements.

On January 12, the Russia-NATO Council ended in Brussels. The alliance refused to guarantee the non-accession of Ukraine. On January 10, negotiations were held in Geneva with the participation of Russian-American delegations. As a result of the talks, Russia and the United States also did not achieve progress on the issue of guarantees on NATO’s non-expansion.
