Mumbai: Cricket fans eagerly awaited a match that could potentially see superstar Virat Kohli surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s century record. However, Kohli fell short of his 49th ODI century, disappointing his fans. Interestingly, Tendulkar himself was present in the gallery to witness the match. But despite missing out on the century, Kohli managed to break another record previously held by Tendulkar.
The Master Blaster’s record of scoring over 1000 runs in an ODI in a calendar year was shattered by Kohli. The Indian captain now holds the record with scores of 1000 runs or more in eight calendar years. Kohli achieved this feat in the years 2011-14, 2017-19, and 2023. On the other hand, Tendulkar achieved this remarkable milestone in seven calendar years, namely 1994, 1996-98, 2000, 2003, and 2007.
Kohli’s incredible records didn’t stop there. According to a tweet by Johns (@CricCrazyJohns), he also became the fastest player to reach 8000 ODI runs in Asia, amassed 4000 international runs against Sri Lanka, became the highest run-scorer in the World Cup 2023, and holds the record for the most half-centuries in World Cups, excluding openers.
In the recent match, opener Shubman Gill displayed an aggressive batting performance, scoring 92 runs. Unfortunately, he fell short of achieving a well-deserved century, much like Kohli. Shreyas Iyer contributed 82 runs before being dismissed. Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madhushanaka took the wickets of the first four players, including the renowned Rohit Sharma. Despite this setback, India managed to set a formidable score of 357 runs for the loss of eight wickets against Sri Lanka.
In response, Sri Lanka struggled to keep up with India’s performance and were ultimately bowled out for a mere 55 runs in 19.4 overs. India won the match by a staggering 302 runs, demonstrating their dominance on the field.
