Councilor Léo Mota (PDT-RS), from the municipality of Vilanova Farm, 90 kilometers from Porto Alegre, criticized the presence of stray animals in the city. According to the politician, the animals should be killed if they were not inside the house.

Mota made the statement on October 9, at a session of the City Council, but it only had repercussions on social media this week.

During the session, the councilor reported that a motorcyclist had an accident after avoiding a dog. He stated that the city had animals “everywhere”, due to “some irresponsible people who put food on the street” and raise “packs” of dogs.

Soon after, Mota said the phrase that went viral on social media. “Guys, if you want to have a dog, you have to have one at home, tied up in the yard and tied up,” she highlighted. “I, at my mother’s house, have [sic] four. If you leave the yard and bother your neighbor, you could kill them. I congratulate whoever killed it. It has to be at home.”

“Misinterpreted statement”

Mota said that his statement was misinterpreted and that, during his speech, he was not talking about abandoned dogs, but rather about animals with owners that are released onto the streets of Fazenda Vilanova. According to the parliamentarian, these dogs enter properties and bite city residents.

“If one of my dogs goes to my neighbor’s property and kills the neighbor’s animals, and the neighbor kills my dog, I won’t become an enemy of the neighbor because of that,” said the councilor. “In reality, I’m the one who has the obligation to take care of the dog.”

The parliamentarian stressed that he does not encourage violence against animals and that critics of his speech do not understand the situation at Fazenda Vilanova. He said that dogs with owners must be locked up inside houses, so that they do not roam the streets of the municipality.

Mota also stated that he received threats on social media, after the repercussion of the statements. He said he will soon take legal action.

Deputies ask the Public Ministry to investigate the case

On Tuesday 31, federal deputies Fred Costa (Republicanos-MG) and Delegate Bruno Lima (PP-SP) filed a letter with the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul to denounce Mota for condoning the crime of animal abuse. . Parliamentarians demanded that the authorities in Rio Grande do Sul investigate the councilor’s statement.
