New details of the future amnesty that the PSOE and Esquerra Republicana have agreed upon are becoming known. From what has emerged, the measure will include those prosecuted for terrorism by the CDR and Tsunami Democràtic, which was one of the main obstacles. The number of beneficiaries is still difficult to calculate, but ERC has assured in a statement issued this Wednesday that “all those retaliated against” in cases related to the ‘procés’ will benefit from this amnesty, “without exceptions.”
On the list would be, first of all, politicians. The first major beneficiary is former president Carles Puigdemont, prosecuted for disobedience and embezzlement. The former ministers who accompanied him in his escape, Toni Comín, Lluís Puig and Clara Ponsatí, would also no longer be investigated. Marta Rovira and Anna Gabriel also left Spain, prosecuted for disobedience. If the amnesty is approved they would not have to answer before the judge either.
Among the possible amnestied politicians are also those convicted in the Supreme Court trial. Although they were pardoned, four of them, Oriol Junqueras, Raül Romeva, Jordi Turull and Dolors Bassa, remain disqualified and, with the amnesty, that disqualification would disappear. How many amnestied people would there be in total? Although it is difficult to calculate, according to data from the independence organization Òmnium Cultural we would be talking about 1,432 people. Of them, 113 have already been convicted, 17 are pending sentencing and 387 have an open criminal case.
These figures include politicians, mayors, officials and also citizens charged with public disorder or even terrorism. Some were arrested in the riots after the Supreme Court ruling was announced, when the pro-independence protests collapsed the Prat Airport.
