The Congolese police have the alleged killers of the Italian ambassador arrested
Luca Attanasio, killed in an ambush on February 22 2021 together with carabiniere Vittorio Iacovacci and the driver Mustapha Milambo. The North Kivu authorities announced this at a press conference in Goma, according to Justin Kabumba, local correspondent of France24 and AP, and Stanis Bujakera Tshiamala, Reuters and Dpa journalist, reported on Twitter.
Some tweets are also shown photos and a video of the alleged killers handed over to the military governor of North Kivu. The police also later confirmed the outcome of the operation.
Luca Attanasio, when he was the victim of the ambush, he was collaborating on an international food aid plan in an area where they have been in action for years bands of predators. It is thought that the motive for the massacre was precisely a robbery or an attempted kidnapping for the purpose of extortion, no other type of evidence emerged, starting from the terrorist matrix. For the failure to escort Attanasio and to his collaborators the public prosecutor of Rome had already registered a UN executive in the register of suspects.
The matrix linked to predatory crime confirmed by the first news arriving from the Congo. The commander of the national police of the province of Goma announced that he had arrested a band, called Aspirant, consisting of six people. Alone two of the six arrested materially participated in the ambush. A third member of the commando, apparently the one who materially killed the ambassador, remains wanted: he would be the leader of the gang. According to police reports during the press conference, the initial intention was to kidnap Athanasius and ask for a million dollar ransom Things went badly, the plan failed and the kidnappers immediately killed the ambassador.
The Italian diplomat was born in Saronno (Varese) in 1977, he was married and father of three daughters; he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about 20 years ago.
