The district football league matches in Thoothukudi started on Tuesday.
Football match
Thoothukudi District Football Association holds annual district level football league matches. Last year the tournament was canceled due to corona. This year the league matches are starting to take place again. Accordingly, this year’s league match started yesterday at the Thoothukudi Daruwai Stadium.
These competitions are divided into 3 zones and are conducted. There are 8 teams from Thoothukudi area in ‘A’ zone. Similarly, in the ‘B’ zone, there are 8 teams from Nazareth and Kayalpattinam. Apart from this competitions are held separately for school teams. There are 9 teams in it.
Started
The matches in the ‘A’ zone started on the heels of yesterday. Thoothukudi Wilsons football team and Thoothukudi Youngsters football team clashed in the first match. The tournament was inaugurated by J. Jesaiya Villavarayar, President of the Tamil Nadu Football Association and President of the Thoothukudi District Football Association. Secretary J. Aldrin Miranda presided. Wilsons won the match 7-1. These competitions take place for 30 consecutive days.
Arrangements for the match have been made by District Football Association administrators Jayakumar, Lourdes Peiris, Nicholas, Madan and Walter.
State competition
Similarly the ‘B’ Zone tournaments are set to start in the first week of February. Zone ‘B’ tournaments are held in Nazareth and Kayalpattinam. Matches for school teams will be held after the schools open.
The winning 2 teams in Zones ‘A’ and ‘B’ will play in the Super League. The winning team will play in the state football league on behalf of the Thoothukudi district, district football officials said.
