Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Acknowledges Penalty Problem in Win Over Titans
In their recent victory against the Titans, the Pittsburgh Steelers were slapped with 10 penalties for a total of 80 yards. Among these penalties were six defensive fouls that allowed Tennessee to gain crucial first downs. As a result, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has emphasized the urgent need for change.
Reflecting on the game, Tomlin addressed the penalties as the primary concern, stating, “Obviously it could have been cleaner, first and foremost from a penalty perspective. Part of being a tough team to beat is not kicking your own butt, and we’ve been doing that, and we’ve got to own that.” The coach expressed his disappointment in their self-inflicted setbacks and stressed the importance of improving in this area during future games.
To actively tackle this issue, Tomlin revealed that officials would be brought into the team’s practice sessions, aiming to ingrain discipline and reduce the occurrence of penalties. He emphasized the catastrophic impact these penalties had on their overall performance, claiming they hindered many of their efforts throughout the game.
When questioned about the Steelers’ ability to contain Titans’ running back Derrick Henry, Tomlin once again attributed the outcome to the excessive penalties. “I thought we did a good job, I just thought the penalties were catastrophic to our defensive effort,” Tomlin commented, highlighting the need to address this problem promptly.
This is not the first time Tomlin has raised concerns about penalties. Just two weeks ago, he called for his team to adjust to the way officials are calling the game. Despite ongoing efforts to rectify this issue, it appears that progress is still a work in motion.
As the Steelers continue their season, Tomlin and his coaching staff will undoubtedly prioritize improving discipline and minimizing penalties. By doing so, they aim to strengthen their overall performance and decrease self-inflicted setbacks caused by unnecessary fouls.
