The Indonesian General Election COMMISSION (KPU) has named 9,917 candidates for legislative members (candidates) for the DPR RI today, Friday (3/11). The names of the legislative candidates along with their proposing political parties, photos and serial numbers will be announced to the public starting Saturday (4/11) via the official website of the Indonesian KPU.

Even though it has been announced, the Chairman of the Indonesian KPU, Hasyim Asy’ari, reminded that thousands of legislative candidates cannot immediately campaign. “Not yet (you can campaign). The new campaign will be on November 28 2023,” he said at the Indonesian KPU Office, Jakarta, Friday (3/11).

It is known that the campaign period for the 2024 elections will be held until February 10 2024. Until the campaign starts on November 28, legislative candidates may only carry out outreach to the public.

In a press conference to determine the permanent candidate list (DCT), Hasyim explained that 6,241 legislative candidates were male. Meanwhile, the remaining 3,676 are female legislative candidates. The total percentage of female legislative candidates’ representation reached 37.13%.

The number of legislative candidates in the DCT is two fewer than previously determined in the provisional candidate list (DCS) in mid-August, namely 9,919 people. According to Hasyim, the reduction in the number of legislative candidates was due to input and responses from the community.

“After (DCS) was announced, there was a public response and an internal party mechanism to respond to the public’s response,” explained Hasyim.

The 9,917 legislative candidates who have been determined will compete for 580 seats in the DPR RI spread across 84 electoral districts. Of the 18 political parties participating in the 2024 election, 11 of them are nominating 580 legislative candidates. Based on KPU data, the Indonesian People’s Wave Party is the party with the fewest DPR RI legislative candidates, namely 396 legislative candidates. (Tri/Z-7)
