ICFJ Knight Prize 2023: Mariam Ouédraogo dedicates her trophy to women victims of terrorism

Ouagadougou, November 3, 2023 (AIB) – Burkinabè journalist Mariam Ouédraogo, who received the 2023 ICFJ Knight international journalism prize during the night in Washington, dedicated her trophy to women victims of terrorism as well as to her loved ones and to its media, Editions Sidwaya.

“To all those women who languish in pain and silence, due to the violence of conflicts and who fight for their survival and that of their offspring. I dedicate this prize to you, and I pray that peace returns to my Burkina Faso, and to other countries prey to terrorist attacks,” declared Mariam Ouédraogo.

The Burkinabè journalist spoke on the evening of November 2, 2023 in Washington, after receiving the 2023 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Prize.

She was named winner of this prize in recognition of her reporting on the ordeal of women victims of terrorists who have afflicted Burkina Faso for eight years.

“Working on women violated by terrorists was an enriching experience, but also painful for me. Painful, because I was very touched by the story of the women survivors of terrorist hell, prostituted and raped,” said Mariam Ouédraogo.

She also dedicated her trophy to her family and to the public press company (Les Editions Sidwaya) which employs her.

The acting ambassador of Burkina Faso to the United States of America, Jean Baptiste Gagré, the press secretary, Servace Maryse Dabou and the head of the protocol department took part in the handover ceremony.

Former intern and collaborator of the Burkina Faso Information Agency (AIB), Mariam Ouédraogo won in Ouagadougou, on October 21, 2023, the Norbert Zongo international prize for investigative journalism (PAJI-NZ) in written press and the prize Marie Soleil Brother of the best journalist in Burkina Faso.

Trained at the Institute of Information and Communication Sciences (ISTIC), she has 4 international prizes to her credit, including the Bayeux-Calvados-Normandy War Correspondents Prize, as well as 16 national prizes.
