Demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people at the call of several organizations, associations, unions and political parties are taking place across France this weekend. In Paris, at least a thousand people left Place de la République at 3 p.m. to head towards Nation.

On the sidelines of this gathering, the leader of the Insoumis Jean-Luc Mélenchon called for an immediate “ceasefire” in Gaza, where according to him “a terrible massacre” is taking place due to Israeli bombings. “The most important, the most urgent, the most immediate is: ceasefire,” he urged. Other marches are organized in Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Nantes, Dijon or Marseille on Sunday.

Leila Gharbi, a 46-year-old legal assistant, who holds a Palestinian flag, came to Paris so that “the genocide stops”: “We need an immediate ceasefire.” At his side, his daughter Inès, a 21-year-old student, wants “the barbarism to stop”. For her part, Keltoum Alouache came “for the children of Gaza and Palestine”. “We are against no one,” specifies this 75-year-old Algerian retiree, who is holding a Palestinian flag.

In the processions, the demonstrators will demand “an immediate ceasefire with an end to the bombings and the forced displacement of the population and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza”, but also “the release of the hostages in the hands of the Hamas,” lists a PC press release. Which also calls for “the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to transport basic necessities” and “the protection of all civilians, regardless of their nationality”.

The PC also requested “a diplomatic initiative from France for a just and lasting peace on the basis of UN resolutions, in particular Resolution No. 242 of the United Nations Security Council of 1967, demanding the withdrawal of forces Israeli armies from the occupied territories.

In Nice, the prefecture banned the demonstration which was to take place this Saturday. An appeal is currently being examined by the Nice court, the Insoumis reported.

Protests under tension

Laurent Nuñez, the prefect of Paris, “met the organizers” of the rally in the capital, reminded them of their responsibility as declarants and invited them to calm down. “No excess will be tolerated during this demonstration,” he said.

Furthermore, as during the last authorized demonstrations, “the authors of remarks which could be assimilated to the apology of terrorism or of an anti-Semitic nature, as well as the bearers of signs or banners contrary to the law will be arrested or will be the subject of “an investigation and a report to the judicial authorities,” he added.

In Strasbourg, the prefect of Bas-Rhin communicated this Friday a series of measures taken ahead of the gathering “in order to avoid disturbances to public order”. Obviously, the carrying and transport of weapons by nature is prohibited. Idem, “for the transport of dangerous, flammable substances or mixtures”.
