The carpenter Antônio Ferreira, 82, says that he used to be proud of his autonomy to carry out domestic and personal activities, but now he can no longer even walk around his own house without help. He was one of the 104 patients who suffered eye infections after a day of free ophthalmological surgeries carried out on September 4 in Amapá.

Within that group of people affected, Ferreira was one of the seven most serious cases, who had to undergo removal of the eyeball due to endophthalmitis. The patient lost his right eye during treatment at the Eye Clinic in the municipality of Ananindeua, in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará. Previously, he already suffered from reduced vision in his left eye due to the cataract.

Ferreira contracted the hospital infection after undergoing surgery on the “Mais Visão” program [Más Visión] in Macapá. In total, 141 people were treated on the same day, and 104 of them suffered complications after the operation. Activities continued until September 8, when the Amapá Public Ministry requested the suspension of services after receiving complaints.

The subcontracted company Saúde Link, responsible for the procedures, stated that it worked “for a thousand days alongside a team of serious doctors, nurses and health professionals so that more than 100,000 people were operated on and recovered their vision.” “There were more than a thousand days of successful interventions.”

Saúde Link reported that patients who suffered hospital infections were treated in a single room, despite the precautions taken. The place was isolated for analysis and, after learning of the cases, activities were suspended indefinitely.
