Stanford University is currently investigating at least five possible hate crime incidents, including a hit-and-run crash involving an Arab Muslim student. The incidents occurred since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war and have raised concerns about growing Islamophobia and hatred in the community.

According to the university’s public safety department, the student was struck by a car on Friday afternoon. The victim reported that the driver intentionally accelerated and struck them while shouting derogatory remarks. The incident is being treated as a hate crime, as confirmed by a preliminary investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol.

Fortunately, the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening. The student described the driver as a white male in his mid-20s with specific physical characteristics. The vehicle involved was identified as a 2015 black Toyota 4Runner or a newer model.

Stanford’s President Richard Saller and Provost Jenny Martinez have condemned the hit-and-run incident, stating that violence on campus is unacceptable, especially when motivated by hate. The Council on American–Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area highlighted the incident as another example of the urgent need to address growing Islamophobia and hatred in society.

In addition to the hit-and-run incident, there have been other reported incidents since October 15. One incident involved Arab, Muslim, and/or Palestinian students who were shoved by another student after attempting to add and remove posters on campus. Another incident involved a student of color who was spat on and verbally harassed near a Palestinian liberation display. A group of Arab, Muslim, and/or Palestinian students had a tote bag containing a computer and other valuables run over in the same area, and a mezuza was removed from a Jewish student’s residence.

Stanford’s public safety authorities and the local law enforcement agencies are urging anyone with information about these incidents to come forward. The university considers these actions to be abhorrent and aims to thoroughly investigate them as hate crimes.

The university community is standing together against these acts of hate and violence. It is crucial to address these incidents to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals on campus and to foster a community that respects diversity and rejects discrimination.

CNN has reached out to the California Highway Patrol for further updates on the investigations. The university and law enforcement departments are committed to addressing these hate crimes and working towards a safe and inclusive environment for all students and faculty members.
