In a crucial meeting held today in Ramallah, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas urged US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to intervene and declare an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Alongside this appeal, Abbas also demanded that vehicles carrying humanitarian aid be allowed to cross into Gaza, where the ongoing conflict has led to a dire humanitarian crisis.
Reiterating the Palestinian Authority’s stance, Abbas emphasized that a comprehensive political solution must be found in order for them to regain power in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian news agency ‘Wafa’ reported that Abbas conveyed during the meeting that the authority would responsibly contribute to a solution encompassing the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. He stressed that peace and security could only be achieved by ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and also called for the recognition of East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.
Abbas further condemned the actions of Israel in Gaza, terming them as genocide. Expressing his anguish, he stated that he had no words to adequately describe the immense suffering inflicted upon the Palestinian people in Gaza due to Israeli war machines.
Meanwhile, a senior spokesperson from the US State Department confirmed that Blinken urged Abbas to ensure the central role of the Palestinian Authority in shaping Gaza’s future. The spokesperson also affirmed the United States’ commitment to fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians.
The meeting between Abbas and Blinken lasted for an hour after which Blinken returned to Turkey. During his visit to Turkey, Blinken is expected to engage in discussions regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with Turkish heads of state.
As tensions rise and the humanitarian situation worsens in Gaza, the international community, including the United States, is under increasing pressure to take decisive action to broker a ceasefire and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population.
