MISCELLANEOUS FACTS – This is the trial of an “extraordinary” child molester which is being held before the Paris criminal court from November 3 to 7, 2023. Véronique Béchu, head of the central group of minor victims, considers this case to be the most important that his service has had to deal with since its creation in 1997. “We have never seen such an important personal production (of child pornography)”, declares the policewoman. Jean-Christophe Quenot, a French teacher in Singapore, is accused of having raped dozens of children over a period of 30 years in Thailand, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Singapore. LThe predator’s “career” ended in 2019, when he was caught red-handed in a hotel by Thai police.

For 30 years, Jean-Christophe Quenot “went under the radar”. For 30 years, he abused young boys aged 11 to 17 (13-14 on average) during his travels and produced no less than 100,000 child pornography films. Particularly sickening documents, according to Véronique Béchu, to the point that certain police officers sometimes had to interrupt their study for a few weeks, in order to recover from this grueling investigation.

In addition to his personal production, the pedophile downloaded hundreds of thousands of child pornography documents. And he wrote down, every day, in dozens of notebooks, the smallest details of his life.

The investigation reveals an insatiable predator, who readily admits his obsession with minors, and who is described by expert psychiatrist Michel Triantafyllou, as being incapable of “control your sexual arousal”. The doctor also notes that the accused is “aware of the forbidden”since he ”had put in place a whole system to avoid getting caught”.

If Jean-Christophe Quenot is accused of having raped a few children in Singapore, he claims to have never attacked his students. Every weekend, he chose a destination where he would satisfy his urges. According to the expert and investigators, his whole life revolved around the predation of young boys. Between 2016 and 2019, examination of his passport reveals no less than 80 entries and exits, just for Thailand…

“Filming sessions”

He recruited his young victims in stadiums or other places that he had identified as breeding grounds for poor children, often drugged, sniffing glue to survive. Several groups of two, three, four, sometimes six children paraded through his room in a single evening. More rarely, he was content with one child at a time for a “filming session”. Because he staged everything and filmed everything, with equipment described as high quality.

When a group of children arrived, he would first shower them, then make them sit on the edge of the bed where he would perform oral sex on them. He then showed them a heterosexual pornographic film to “excite them”. After the film, he demanded fellatio from minors, forced them to sodomize him (or attempt to do so), and, more rarely, sodomized them himself. Jean-Christophe Quenot is also a fan of “golden showers”: he urinated or made himself urinate in his mouth. After an hour or two, the group of children would leave and another would arrive. And it all started again. Each victim received between 17 and 25 euros. When he had exhausted his “stock” of children for the evening, he would look for young prostitutes in the park, then “if he still wasn’t full, he went to a sauna with adults”explains Commander Béchu.

If Jean-Christophe Quenot admits almost all of the facts with which he is accused, he nevertheless contests the classification of rape to the extent that, according to him, the fact of paying meant that “the children consented”. He also states that the minors were having fun and thought they were “pornstars”. An amusement that Commander Béchu firmly denies, who describes a man who could be violent if he was not satisfied, and children who were disgusted or retching.

A positive balance of 100,000 euros

The expert psychiatrist Michel Triantafyllou explains that the predator showed no remorse, nor any compassion for his victims, during his examination in 2020. Three years later, Jean-Christophe Quenot, however, claims to have become aware that he is “sick”, thanks to the medical care he received in prison. Michel Triantafyllou recommends the longest possible obligation of care; he also deplores the fact that the court cannot order it for the entire life of the criminal.

The predator’s “career” ended in 2019, when he was caught in flagrante delicto in a hotel by Thai police. However, he managed to get out of prison thanks to the help of a friend, a school principal in Bangkok. Mr. G., who came to testify on the first day of the trial, last Friday, explains that Jean-Christophe Quenot was a close friend of his deceased wife, and that he accepted that the predator gave him his bank card to withdraw the 10,000 euros necessary to pay a deposit. He also claims that Quenot’s two bank accounts had a positive balance of 100,000 euros and that, on a whim, he made “bullshit” and withdrew an additional 1,600 euros for himself, without his friend’s consent. The latter obviously does not hold it against him since he apologized to him during the hearing, for having concealed his illicit activities.

Quenot was able to recover his passport by bribing a Thai official, and travel by land to Malaysia, probably through the services of a smuggler. From there, he took a plane to Switzerland, then went to France.

The central group of minor victims had been warned by the Bangkok internal security service of the Frenchman’s arrest and had opened a “mirror investigation”, that is to say an investigation parallel to those carried out by the foreign authorities. Warned of his escape, the police searched for the predator and ended up arresting him at his mother’s house in Besançon. They discovered that Quenot was carrying a USB key with him containing some of his documents, but above all, that he had sent packages to his mother’s address before his departure. This is how the French police recovered numerous notebooks and hundreds of thousands of child pornography documents revealing the extent of the child criminal’s activities.

The investigation is far from over, as international cooperation with certain countries is complicated. During the current trial, Jean-Christophe Quenot is only being tried for the acts committed in Malaysia, out of 25 victims. He risks 20 years in prison and must be questioned in depth this Monday, November 6, by the Paris criminal court.
