Invited by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, to a new “Saint-Denis meeting” with political party leaders on November 17, the socialist Olivier Faure declined the invitation, Monday, November 6, during an interview to the Public Senate channel.

The first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) bases his decision on the letter received on Sunday by the party leaders in which the President of the Republic proposes to repeat a meeting on the format of those held on August 30 and October 12 ; the latter was entirely devoted to the conflict between Hamas and Israel and took place at the Elysée Palace.

The head of state writes that he wants ” pursue “ the thoughts involved “on the evolution of the referendum”. He proposes to broaden the scope of subjects to “social issues”including that of immigration.

“There is a call here to the Republicans who are demanding it loud and clear, like the RN [Rassemblement national] », reacts Mr. Faure. “I will never participate in this deal,” affirms the socialist, adding that, in his letter, Mr. Macron would close the door to the left’s referendum proposals on the taxation of superprofits and pension reform. “If he wants to marry the right and push the reasoning to the extreme right, great good to him, it will be without me,” continues Mr. Faure.

“There has never been a consensus, on any subject”

“In these meetings with the Head of State (…), we are there to give an opinion and then he tries to make people believe that, having given our opinion, he succeeded in finding a synthesis that he would produce in front of the French, which would be the result of a global consensus between us. But there has never been a consensus, on any subject for that matter. continues the first secretary of the PS. “I don’t want to abolish Parliament, I believe in democracy, I believe in the fact that there are places where we can vote”he adds.

La France insoumise showed reservations about its possible participation. On the side of the ecologists, an official response will be given on Tuesday, but the entourage of Marine Tondelier, national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), explains that her presence would make it possible to discuss environmental and social justice issues, and to push for a ceasefire in Gaza since international issues will be discussed. The Communist Party authorities are due to raise the issue on Monday.

Mr. Macron also proposes lowering the threshold to one million voters, compared to nearly five million currently, to allow the organization of a shared initiative referendum (RIP).
