A team of astronomers has made an astonishing discovery that could shed light on the mysteries of the universe. An eight billion-year-old radio signal with extraordinary energy levels has been detected, according to a report published in the journal Science.

This signal, known as a “fast radio burst” (FRB), lasted for just a millisecond but contained a staggering amount of energy. Dubbed FRB 20220610A, it emitted the same amount of energy as the sun produces in 30 years.

Coauthor Ryan Shannon explained, “If we count up the amount of normal matter in the universe – the atoms that we are all made of – we find that more than half of what should be there today is missing. We think that the missing matter is hiding in the space between galaxies but it may just be so hot and diffuse that it’s impossible to see using normal techniques.”

The Australian SKA Pathfinder radio telescope played a pivotal role in the discovery of this immense signal. Further investigations were carried out using a telescope in China, which confirmed that this was the oldest and most remote fast radio burst ever detected.

This remarkable finding follows another perplexing discovery made earlier this year. Scientists came across a mysterious object that emits radio waves every 21 minutes, and it has continued to do so for the past 45 years. Despite extensive study, astronomers remain uncertain about its nature and origin.
