The Israel-Hamas conflict is terribly explosive, which could dangerously spread to the Middle East. The creation of the state of Israel in 1948 by decision of the United Nations in territory that would have been Palestinian, beyond the controversy over its antecedents dating back to before Christ, has the world in a state of anguish and expectation.
On October 7 of this year, Hamas took the Israeli intelligence services by surprise, invaded its territory, murdered 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped 220 hostages of different nationalities and provoked the inevitable reaction from Israel, which has resulted in almost 1,400 deaths and more than 2,000 injured, it has destroyed buildings and has led to the interruption of electricity, drinking water and food. The population of that region of Palestine is subjected to the lack of basic survival elements and the horror of war, bombings, the death of civilians and brutal suffering.
Hamas is clearly a radical and terrorist group, whose sole objective is the destruction of the State of Israel. Palestine – population 5.3 million – is a country not widely recognized in the international world. For example, of the 5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, only Russia and China recognize it, but not the United States, France and the United Kingdom. It should be governed by the Palestinian National Authority, PNA, but Hamas rules in Gaza. The president of the ANP since 2005, Mahmoud Abbas, 88, has lost control of his country.
For its part, Israel, with a population of 9,656,000 inhabitants, is led by a radical prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been at the head of the government for 16 non-continuous years. He has been accused of corruption in his previous terms and has caused great internal controversy because he tries to eliminate constitutional control of the Supreme Court of Justice.
And to complete the picture, we should not rule out that the Hamas attack was to prevent the recognition of Israel by Saudi Arabia, which would have profoundly changed the political situation in that region.
