Mechanical keyboards are becoming popular nowadays as they provide a better touch, touch and typing experience. Here we have the Epomaker EK68 compact mechanical keyboard. Read on to find out how it works and if it’s right for you.

A compact keyboard for you?

He Epomaker EK68 It is a mechanical keyboard with 65% gasket assembly. What this means is that its length is only 65% the size of a normal keyboard. It only has 66 keys (it’s missing the numeric keypad) and a rotary knob in the top right corner that allows you to quickly adjust the volume. Weighing 0.8kg, this is a compact keyboard ideal for taking with you wherever you go.

There are three connection modes available to pair this keyboard with your PC (or phone). Supports a wireless connection with Bluetooth 5.0 or higher at 2.4 GHz and a wired connection with a USB-C cable. You can select the mode with the toggle switch on the back of the keyboard.

Another switch lets you switch between Windows and Mac. There are no options for Linux, Android, or iOS. However, I had no problems pairing and using it on Linux and Android in “WIN” mode.

There is no indicator on the keys, so I had to read the manual to find out how to pair the keyboard via Bluetooth. In Bluetooth mode, you need to press and hold the fn + q/W./mi button to activate pairing mode. It can be paired with three devices, so you must press the Q, W or E buttons, respectively, to switch to each device.

For 2.4GHz mode, just insert the dongle into the USB port of the PC and it should work immediately. If not, press the fn + R buttons to pair with the dongle.

The fn key is particularly important on this keyboard, as it is the key to accessing many of its hidden options. For example, to access the F1 to F12 buttons, you must press fn + 1 – 12or fn + Page Up for the Home function. fn + | will toggle the different RGB backlight modes.

Like any other mechanical keyboard, it comes with RGB backlighting that can display a lighting pattern that you can configure to your liking. Personally, I’m not a fan of RGB backlighting as it’s distracting to me. The first thing I always do when I get a new mechanical keyboard is turn off the lighting option.

What I really like about this keyboard is the indicator light next to the arrow keys that shows the connection status and battery life. This allows you to quickly see if your keyboard is connected to the PC and/or if the battery is dead and needs to be recharged.

Performance

When typing on the EK68, you get a tactile feel, but no noise. I’m impressed with this, considering the other Epomaker keyboards I’ve used make noise when I type. This is definitely one of the quietest mechanical keyboards I’ve ever used.

This keyboard comes with a 3000 mAh battery, which lasts at least two weeks of use. After the first charge, I have been using it continuously for two weeks (five to seven hours a day) without needing to recharge.

If you’re a DIY lover, you’ll be happy to know that it has a hot-swappable PCB that supports both 3-pin and 5-pin switches, so you can swap out each keycap to use a different switch if you don’t want to. as the default. It is compatible with most 3-pin and 5-pin mechanical switches, such as Cherry, Gateron, Otemu, Kailh and other MX switches and clones. There is no soldering involved. Simply unplug the keycap and switch (using the tool provided) and swap them out for your preferred switch and keycap. It’s that easy.

My keyboard is the black-gold version, which is a mix of gray, black, and gold keys. Ships with additional keys for the Space, Enter, Backspace and Esc buttons so you can change all keys to the same uniform color. But what’s missing is an extra Domain key to change with the Win key when using it on a Mac.

Conclusion

After testing several Epomaker keyboards, I personally enjoy using this EK68 keyboard due to its comfortable typing and quietness. The inclusion of Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connection modes makes it even more useful and versatile. All in all, this is a keyboard that just works and works perfectly. That’s what we really wanted, right?
