ING moves forward in achieving its environmental objectives with the signing of an agreement with BREEAM Spain for the joint preparation of the strategy for improvement and sustainable development of ING’s asset portfolio in Spain through the implementation of its sustainability assessment and certification of the construction BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Enviromental Assestment Method).

The Technological Institute of Galicia (ITG), under agreement with BRE Global Limited, is the entity responsible for its development and its adaptation to the nature and particularities of the construction sector in Spain.

ING will apply this methodology in the Real Estate projects of its Corporate Banking and Investment area, with the objective of boost sustainability in the construction sector, accompanying and advising its clients and leading the green transition in our country. The bank is committed to the transition towards cleaner cities, efficiency in the use of scarce natural resources, such as water, and has a focus on renewable energy.

During the signing of the agreement, Alfonso Tolcheff, general director for Corporate and Investment Banking at ING Spain & Portugal, highlighted that “At ING, sustainability is at the center of our businesses. With our TERRA strategy we want to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. And this not only focuses on our own carbon emissions, such as travel or the electricity in our buildings, but also on the emissions financed within our retail business and the different corporate banking sectors of ING. We are convinced that to be successful it is essential to connect and work as a team with experts from all sectors“.

Furthermore, Julián Bravo, head of Real Estate Finance at ING Spain & Portugal, points out that “ING Wholesale Banking Real Estate combines sector experience with a global team, supporting our clients on their journey towards sustainability and decarbonisation. Therefore, we have decided to start closer cooperation with BREEAM. Our clients operate in multiple countries in EMEA, the US and APAC, just like us and that is why we also need a partner with international experience in the real estate sector to help us in the ESG transition process and increase our value proposition to our clients.”

For his part, Javier Torralba, general director of BREEAM Spain, reaffirms that “The role of banking is key in the green transition of the construction sector, and the signing of this agreement with ING represents a great step towards achieving a more sustainable real estate sector, as well as a boost for other entities and organizations to trust the BREEAM methodology as the global leading sustainable building certification system”.

ING leads by example: its headquarters in Madrid stands out for its efficiency

The ING headquarters in Madrid is a fully sustainable building certified with the highest rating and built with recycled materials manufactured in Spain. The electrical supply proceeds to 100% renewable energy, 38% of the lighting is obtained from the solar panels installed at the headquarters, it uses 20% of the rainwater and 100% of the water is heated, thanks to a solar thermal installation. In addition, it has an urban garden with the capacity to absorb 558 kilograms of CO2 per year.
