A “red line” has been crossed. The mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan announced on Tuesday that he had filed a complaint for insult and defamation against the senator of Bouches-du-Rhône Stéphane Le Rudulier (LR). The latter notably estimated on Saturday in an interview with Figaro that Benoît Payan stood “on the side of the drug traffickers”.
“The red line of insult, defamation, lies and dishonesty has been crossed” by Stéphane Le Rudulier, said Benoît Payan on X (ex-Twitter). By his words, the senator “does not simply step out of his role as an elected official, he shames his mandate and shames those who believe that the Republic is honored by respecting the laws”, denounced the mayor of the city Phocaean.

“International drug trafficking kills and destroys Marseille families. Lying, using these tragedies for political purposes is an abject attitude, unworthy of the responsibilities of an elected representative of the Republic,” added the councilor.
“Wildship of Marseille”
In an interview with Le Figaro published on Saturday, the senator judged that “the biggest person responsible for the encroachment of Marseille is its mayor, Benoît Payan”. He also criticized the majority for having shown “no support for Israeli democracy under attack”, saying that “they are too afraid of offending their community electorate”.
“The City has never done as much for the safety of the people of Marseille as since our arrival,” replied the councilor on X, taking in particular the “30%” increase in the number of municipal police officers. “Marseille always stands alongside all victims of anti-Semitism and racism, tirelessly and without distinction,” Benoît Payan also affirmed.
