The Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, Álvaro Delgado, decided to focus his first words on the Frente Amplio after the outbreak of the drug passport crisis, ensuring that the opposition party is “the handle of the catastrophe.” Of course, he blandly admitted that they are “complex days.”

In less than a week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs resigned, Francisco Bustillothe Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heberthe undersecretary (vice minister) of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel, and the advisor to the president of the Republic, Omar Laflufwhich join other heads that have rolled before, such as that of the former vice chancellor, Carolina Ache. All of these took a step aside for the granting a passport to the dangerous Uruguayan drug trafficker, Sebastián Marset.

“This must be looked at calmly, with a lot of serenity, with a lot of humility, these are complex days but you do what you have to do,” Delgado said at a press conference in Juanicó. “In this, he does not do what he wants or what he can, he does what he must,” he added.

“The government has to continue. “He continues working, doing things, inaugurating things, having overcome a situation that had political sensitivity, public repercussions, some will call it a political crisis, others will not, in no case is it an institutional crisis,” added Delgado, participating alongside President Luis Lacalle Pou. at the inauguration of the operations and maintenance center of the Central Railway.

According to Delgado, the president came out to “show his face and take charge,” of which he claims to be “proud” because he made “tough decisions” by accepting resignations from the aforementioned former officials. “Directing things and continuing work is part of what a ruler has to do,” he remarked.

Delgado hard against the Broad Front

Regarding the position of the Frente Amplio opposition, the Secretary of the Presidency was harsh: he believes that “nothing is going to be enough for the Frente Amplio” and he accused the opposition of wanting to “install” the issue of an institutional crisis. “It will not be enough for the Frente Amplio, it will not be enough if there were two ministers, four or six, they will always ask for more”, he reiterated.

And he continued with his criticism of the FA: “I was a little sorry to see the press conference yesterday (and I expected) a slightly more republican attitude (…) here is the handle of the catastrophe.”

“We come out of all the crises and come out with attitude, showing our face, in more beautiful moments, in uglier moments, with better news, with worse news, there are always mistakes in governments, there are successes. I believe that the things that are done and above all the attitude with which they are done are much more impressive, which is to try to explain them to the people, show their faces and not fall into being the kings of the handle of permanent catastrophe.” Delgado specified.
