The objective is to increase maximum speeds up to 250 km/h for long and medium distances.
Adif will put out to tender for 18.3 million euros the drafting of the projects for the renewal and conditioning of the Granada-Almera railway line. These projects will identify the most efficient technical solution to improve the performance and competitiveness of the connection, acting on all elements of the infrastructure.

The improvements that are projected in this section of the Mediterranean Corridor will allow, based on the analyzes carried out in the functional study prepared by Adif, in which the main points of improvement were identified, to increase the maximum speeds up to 250 km/h for the circulations long and medium distance and the circulation of 750 meter freight trains. In addition, the gauges on bridges and tunnels will be adapted to allow, in the future, the electrification of the line for 25 kV alternating current, as well as the circulation of railway highway services.
Once the optimal alternative has been determined, the projects will be drawn up to allow the works to be undertaken, guaranteeing compatibility with other future railway actions. In addition, Adif plans to draft the projects for the removal of the level crossings of the Granada-Almera connection, thus completing the planned improvements.
The projects, which include 180 kilometers of the Moreda-Granada and Linares/Baeza-Almera lines, will define the comprehensive track renewal actions (rail, sleepers and ballast); the adaptation of the route and the platform to increase the maximum speed, with specific adjustments to the route; the treatment of bridges, trenches, embankments and drains; the adequacy of the gauge of all the tunnels; and the adaptation of stations for the passage of 750-meter trains, in addition to actions on platforms and underpasses.
The contract has been divided into five lots:
• Lot 1. Granada-Iznalloz section, between kilometer points 56/417 and 23/696 of the Moreda-Granada line. It includes the two headers of the Iznalloz station.
• Lot 2. Iznalloz-Fonelas section, between kilometer point 23/696 of the Moreda-Granada line and kilometer point 143/704 of the Linares/Baeza-Almera line. It ends before the head of the Moreda side of the Fonelas station.
• Lot 3. Fonelas-Fiana section, between kilometer points 143/704 and 181/889 of the Linares/Baeza-Almera line. It includes the two headers of the Fonelas station and ends before the header on the Linares side of the Fiana station.
• Lot 4. Fiana-Fuente Santa section, between kilometer points 181/889 and 219/692 of the Linares/Baeza-Almera line. It includes the actions at the two head stations of the Fiana and Fuente Santa stations.
•Lot 5. Fuente Santa-Almera section, between kilometer points 219/692 and 250/526 of the Linares/Baeza-Almera line. It ends before the Almera station.
