LA PAZ, (Xinhua) – Bolivian exports between January and August of this year have experienced a drop of 24 percent in value and 19 percent in volume compared to the same period in 2022, the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE) reported today. ).
The report, with data from the state National Institute of Statistics (INE), specifies that exports of traditional products decreased by 21 percent in value and 18 percent in volume compared to August 2022.
The manager of the IBCE, Gary Rodríguez, explained that sales of non-traditional products exceeded 2,000 million dollars and highlighted the good performance of external sales of meat derivatives, chia, quinoa and textile clothing.
According to the expert, the 24 percent decrease in the value of its exports during the eight months of the year has its impact on the drop in foreign exchange income of almost 2.3 billion dollars.
“Exports are important for the country in terms of the foreign currency necessary for imports and the fulfillment of international commitments assumed by the State in terms of credits,” he argued.
According to INE data, exports until August 2023 reached 7,422 million dollars, a figure 2,292 million dollars lower than that registered in the same period of 2022, when it reached 9,715 million dollars.
The IBCE executive stressed that there are both internal and external factors that explain this complex foreign trade situation. Internally, he said that the constant road blockades that occur at any time in the country.
Internationally, he noted that persistent inflation, declining prices in general, and rising transportation logistics costs are significant challenges. In addition, he mentioned that the blockades on the border between Peru and Bolivia for more than two and a half months have hindered the normal flow of products to the neighboring country and exports to international markets.
