The trial of Osman Narimanoglu (Rzayev), the head of the Demokratik.az website, is unreasonably delayed, his wife Arzu Rzayeva said. According to him, the court investigation has been going on for the 16th month.

According to Rzayeva, the judicial team of the Ganja Serious Crimes Court, chaired by Roman Alakbarli, deliberately postpones the trial under various pretexts.

The last court session was held on September 7, and the court decided to send a request to the mobile operator. By law, court requests must be served within 30 days. However, two months have passed and the court does not resume hearings.

The editor’s wife believes that the extension of the trial is an “order” to keep Narimanoglu in prison for as long as possible and to put moral pressure on him.

In turn, the human rights defender and lawyer Rasul Jafarov told Turan that the deadline for the court investigation is not provided for in the criminal-procedural legislation.

On the one hand, it is written that the judicial investigation should be conducted “within a reasonable period of time”, on the other hand, it is stated that it should be “objective and comprehensive”, therefore it should not be limited by time. However, when there are many defendants and witnesses in the case, when it is necessary to conduct various expertises, it is understandable that the court investigation takes a long time.

Osman Narimanoglu was arrested on July 5, 2022 on charges of extortion. After his arrest, he said that the accusations were false, that he was slandered by officials of the Reclamation Department of Goranboy and Goygol districts for publishing material about the corrupt practices of doctors.

“For the Freedom of Azerbaijan Political Prisoners” Union recognized him as a political prisoner.
