To fight cyberbullying among young people in France, Instagram announced this Thursday the creation of a “safety button” that allows you to call an emergency line directly, a world first.

Anyone who reports harassment will be able to access a telephone call button that will put them in contact with psychologists and lawyers at 3018, the national help number for victims of digital violence.

For the private association e-Enfance, promoter of the initiative, this direct call button, which connects to 3018 without leaving the application, is an effective instrument desired for a long time.

“We have been asking for a safe button for years, we have also asked for it at the European level,” said Justine Atlan, general director of e-Enfance.

“It took a little time to be understood, but we are pleased that direct access has been integrated,” Atlan explained.

“This will allow young victims, once their complaint has been established, to benefit from immediate targeted support,” he said.

TikTok, a network very popular among young people, will not create a direct call button, but those who report a case will be offered a link to the 3018 service website.

A quarter of French families have already faced the problem of cyberbullying a minor, according to a recent survey carried out for e-Enfance: 15% of primary school students have already faced it and between 25% and 27% of high school students.

To address this phenomenon, the French government presented at the end of September a series of measures ranging from the systematic reporting of harassment cases to the courts to the desire to exclude harassing students from social networks.
