Languages ​​have always been a key section of resumes. For years, speaking two or more languages ​​exponentially increased the probability of emerging victorious in the selection process for a job. In 2020, the year the pandemic broke out, this requirement lost popularity (12.62%). Now, it is once again gaining prominence in job offers, although it is still not essential. Specifically, the demand for languages ​​was included in 16.8% of the job offers published in 2022, 7.73 percentage points above 2021 (9.14%), but 17 points below the data recorded in 2019 (33.99%), according to the XXVI “Adecco Infoemployment Report: Employment Supply and Demand in Spain”.

For yet another year, English continues to lead the ranking of the languages ​​most in demand by Spanish companies. During the past year, 65.17% of the offers that required languages ​​required English, but this percentage is almost 10 points lower than what this language represented in the 2021 offers, and 24 points less than what was required in 2019 .

French remains stable in second position and once again marks the best figure for this language in the last eight years (17.83%). German remains the third most in-demand language and there is also a large increase in offers requesting it (16.94%, nine points more than in 2021), leaving it less than one point behind French.

Behind these first three positions is the Portuguese, present in 3.08% (1.71 points more) of the vacancies; This language has recovered one position over 2021 and surpasses Italian by more than half a point, which has been required in 2.64% of offers in 2022 (1.38 points more). Less common languages ​​such as Chinese, Russian or Arabic were only requested in 4.81% of the offers. This percentage grows compared to the previous year by 1.5 points, although it does not represent data prior to 2020 (8.43%).

The Balearic and Canary Islands, the regions that most require other languages

The regions most linked to tourism and migration have been the most interested in hiring polyglots, as is the case of the Balearic Islands, which repeats its position (18.6% of its offers require languages), the Canary Islands (17.63%) and Madrid (17.31%). It is relevant to mention that these three autonomies are the only ones that exceeded the Spanish average in language demand (16.87%).

Extremadura remains in fourth place (16.84%) and represents the highest demand for German, which amounts to almost 34%. Coming to fifth place, experiencing the greatest percentage increase of the year, is Catalonia, which has gone from being the region where other languages ​​were least in demand to closing the top 5 with 15.53% of its vacancies requesting a language (8.72 points more than in 2021). At the bottom of the list are Galicia, Aragón, Murcia, Cantabria and Navarra – between 12% and 10% of its offers.

Transport, the sector that most demands languages

Last year, the sector in which the requirement to have other languages ​​grew the most was Transportation Equipment (39.89 percentage points more than in 2021), up to 69.89% of the offers. The second position is for the category of International Organizations (61.11%), which rose by 19.68 points, and the third for Foreign Trade (50.72% of the offers require languages), which climbed from fifth place thanks to a rebound of 15.70 points.

Management and middle management positions are the categories where candidates with multiple languages ​​are most required. Both exceed 90% of the offers to fill these positions. They are followed by the category of technicians, where 72.24% of job offers detail having other languages ​​as a requirement. At the bottom of the table is the employee category (25.66%), in which fewer candidates with these characteristics are required.
