The 2024 budget officially adopted at the Palais-Bourbon, the government will be able to breathe. The motion of censure tabled by the deputies of La France insoumise (LFI) after 49.3 triggered Wednesday by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on the “expenses” aspect was rejected Thursday evening in the National Assembly. The text will be examined by senators from November 23.
The deputies voted 167 against, with censorship requiring 289 votes to be adopted. This motion was only signed by 78 LFI and communist deputies, a sign that the mechanism is running out of steam in the face of multiple recourses to 49.3 by the executive over the past year and a half. The government thus escaped a 24th motion of censure.
According to the Prime Minister, this failure of LFI is “new proof” of the “divisions” within the left which constitutes Nupes. Elisabeth Borne castigated a “frantic” use of the motion of censure, even accusing LFI of wanting “austerity” with the “major tax increases” that the party is proposing, according to her.
Lack of discussion
“If I were in your place, I would put all the State’s resources into action to ensure that no child sleeps outside tonight. But no, you, you make 49.3 for the rich,” MP Antoine Léaument (LFI) told him in the introduction.
Despite the forceful passage, the final text retained several amendments. The fuel allowance of 100 euros will notably be extended to 1.6 million additional beneficiaries, on the proposal of elected officials Liot and Horizons, for a total cost of 600 million euros. On the education file, 30 million euros will be allocated to the creation of anti-harassment brigades within academies, with an amendment from MoDem.
Despite these concessions, deputies from all sides criticize the government for paying little attention to the majority votes obtained in committee or in the hemicycle, and sometimes for retaining amendments which were not even the subject of discussion in Parliament.
