Ukraine said on Saturday it had shot down about two-thirds of the 31 attack drones launched overnight, mainly at frontline areas, by Moscow, which also targeted the capital Kiev in the morning. “Nineteen Shahed-136/131 attack drones were destroyed. The Russian occupiers sent most of the attack drones towards the frontline areas,” the Air Force said, adding that Russia also used several missiles.

Ukraine expects a surge in such attacks this winter, following strikes last winter that targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, leaving thousands of people without heat or electricity for long periods.

“After a long break of 52 days, the enemy has resumed its missile attacks on kyiv! » declared the head of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital Sergiy Popko on the Telegram messenger.

No victims

Journalists from Agence France-Presse in central kyiv heard two loud explosions and saw traces in the sky at dawn. Air warning sirens sounded shortly afterwards. No casualties or material damage were reported in the capital during Saturday morning.

Two missiles, however, landed in a field between two residential areas in the kyiv region, said the head of the regional military administration Ruslan Kravchenko. Five apartment buildings were damaged, with broken roofs and windows, he added.
