The Ministry of Education is extending the Ernst Mach scholarships for Ukrainian students and scientists, which expire at the end of February 2024, for another year. Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) announced this to the APA. This means that around 1,300 people will continue to receive 715 euros per month to continue their studies or research. The general exemption from tuition fees for Ukrainians will also be extended for the summer semester of 2024.

The special scholarship “Ernst Mach Ukraine” has been running since the summer semester of 2022. This supports Ukrainian bachelor’s, master’s, diploma and doctoral students as well as graduates, postdocs and established scientists who are completing their studies or research work at an Austrian university or college want to continue or record. It is paid out for a period of one to nine months, which can be extended to a maximum of 21 months.

Previously, these scholarships were limited to the end of February 2024. Anyone who receives a scholarship at this point will have its duration extended by one year (provided they have appropriate academic achievements). A total of around ten million euros will be spent on the extension, says Polaschek. “In this way, we continue to provide comprehensive support to affected students and researchers who had to leave their home country, Ukraine, due to the war, or who were studying or researching in Austria before the war broke out in February 2022.” The extension is in connection with the extension of the displaced person status for Ukrainians proposed by the EU Commission until the beginning of March 2025.

In addition, all Ukrainian students should not have to pay tuition fees at public universities and teacher training colleges (PH) for another semester. The corresponding exception regulation in the tuition fee regulation is to be extended again and universities and universities are to be reimbursed for the resulting shortfall by the ministry.

There are currently around 2,500 Ukrainians studying at 22 public universities and 14 teacher training colleges in Austria. As third-country nationals, you would normally have to pay 726.72 euros per semester, which is twice the regular tuition fee. With the start of the war in Ukraine, this obligation to pay contributions was abolished.
