The star – in the documentary “Sly” on Netflix – remembers with pain the premature death of her first-born son Sage and their complicated relationships

A painful and complicated relationship. Sylvester Stallone – in the new documentary “Sly”, which debuted on Netflix at the beginning of November – spoke about the complex relationship with his first-born son Sage, who died prematurely in 2012, at the age of 36, from coronary heart disease. The relationship between father and son was difficult and full of misunderstandings, but there was a lot of love between the two. In the film Rocky V, released in 1990, Sage played Rocky Balboa’s son, Robert.

The plot of the film tells us that Robert feels neglected by his father, who we see involved as a mentor to the young boxer Tommy Gunn. A screenplay (written by Stallone himself) which, – as the star explains in the documentary – in certain respects, materialized in his real life. When Rocky V was released in November 1990, Sylvester Stallone’s career was at its peak. “Unfortunately, you put these things before your family. And the repercussions are quite radical and devastating.”

Sage Stallone himself spoke about it in 1996, in an interview with People. “When I was screaming, ‘You never spent time with me! You never spent time with my mother!’, it was true. I looked at my father and really told him.” Sylvester Stallone separated from his ex-wife, Sasha Czack, Sage’s mother, in 1985. “I brought up a lot of things. We burst into tears a couple of times. After the film everything changed. We would do anything for each other,” Sage Stallone added in the 1990s.
