The Department of Medical Services at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health is calling for donations of breast milk to the breast milk bank for sick children. Breast milk is considered the most beneficial food for children, especially for sick newborns. Dr. Weerawut Imsamran, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, highlighted the importance of breast milk for premature and sick babies, stating that every year approximately 1 million babies will die from premature birth, with many not receiving breast milk due to various complications.

Dr. Akkarathan Jitnuyanon, Director of Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, added that the breast milk bank plays a crucial role in allocating donated breast milk for maximum benefit and safety. The process involves screening donors, controlling the time and temperature of milk delivery, storing milk at a constant temperature, pasteurizing milk according to standards, and distributing pasteurized milk to the target group of infants.

The target group of infants who should receive donated breast milk from the bank includes premature infants, infants with a low birth weight, infants who have had intestinal surgery, and sick babies whose mothers have contraindications to breastfeeding.

Qualifications for mothers who wish to donate breast milk include being healthy, not taking medications contraindicated for breastfeeding, having an ample supply of milk and normal blood results, and being willing to undergo a blood test and complete a risk screening questionnaire.

It is important to note that mothers should not share breast milk among themselves due to the risks of disease transmission, exposure to drugs, and contamination with germs. Breast milk from the bank is intended for temporary use while waiting for the mother’s own milk, as “your own breast milk is the best.”

Mothers who meet the qualifications and wish to donate breast milk can contact the Breast Milk Bank at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health or call 066-121-7747. This initiative aims to ensure that sick and premature infants receive the vital nourishment they need for their development and well-being.]
