Last Monday, November 6, Ángel Rivera, the CEO of Santander Spain; Joan Subirats, the Minister of Universities; and Eva Alcón, the president of Crue Spanish Universities, have renewed the existing agreement between the three institutions for the development of Santander Scholarships for Erasmus students in Spain.

The agreement will allow 1,875 scholarships to be awarded in the 2024-2025 academic year to Erasmus students from Spanish universities, for amounts of up to 1,000 euros.

The Santander Scholarships for Erasmus program will grant a total of up to 3,000 scholarships, after its expansion in 2022 to Germany, Portugal, and Poland. This initiative of Santander Bank It seeks to recognize the academic excellence of Erasmus+ scholarship recipients, and to promote educational inclusion and equal opportunities for students with less favorable economic conditions.

Ángel Rivera, the CEO of Santander Spain, has stressed that this collaboration represents the commitment shared by the Ministry, Crue and Santander Bank to improve the level of development of society, and has stated that the main objective of the entity with these scholarships is to “add opportunities”, because “there is nothing more unfair and exclusive than the barriers to access to education.”

Rivera has pointed out that Erasmus students “also build Europe, create a European identity and, in addition, they return with better opportunities to find a job after graduating.”

Joan Subirats, the Minister of Universities, has declared that “internationalization is a key element in the future of the Spanish university system. In this sense, the mobility of our students is essential in their learning processes and the acquisition of knowledge. ERASMUS+ is the program that has contributed the most to European construction in its more than 35 years of existence, it shows us the way forward.

For her part, Eva Alcón, the president of Crue Spanish Universities, has highlighted that “in the current context, the connection with companies and institutions abroad is essential to close a learning process aligned with the reality of a labor market that He understands less and less about borders. Employers demand professionals with a great capacity for adaptation and a willingness to work in multidisciplinary and diverse teams and the Santander scholarships for Erasmus help us universities guarantee access to that training, skills and competencies to those who most deserve it and need it most.” .

Banco Santander has invested 10.5 million euros in this program since 2018, which will have benefited more than 21,500 university students by the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.

The universities themselves are in charge of selecting the scholarship recipients. Among other requirements, applicants must have been granted aid from the Erasmus+ study mobility program in Europe and/or internships.

Universities may prioritize granting aid to students who have received a general (socioeconomic) scholarship from the Ministry in the previous year, and those who have a disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Registration for the Santander Scholarships for Erasmus students in Spain can be done through the Santander Scholarships website until March 27, 2024.

The Erasmus+ program of the European Union is managed in the fields of education and training by the Spanish Service for the Internationalization of Education (SEPIE), attached to the Ministry of Universities. This initiative has been active for 35 years, and has benefited more than 900,000 Spanish university students.

In Spain, more than 81,500 university students applied for the Erasmus+ Scholarships, both for studies and internships, of which 53,042 were final beneficiaries.

In the period 2021-2027, the program focuses on social inclusion, ecological and digital transitions, promoting the participation of young people in democratic life, and supports the priorities and activities established in the European Education Area, the Digital Education Action Plan and the European Skills Agenda.
