This Saturday, Russian authorities opened an investigation into a “terrorist act” after the derailment of a freight train due to an explosion in a region southeast of Moscow, the Investigative Committee announced.

The triggering of a “homemade explosive device” caused the derailment of 19 wagons in the morning, 15 of which were damaged, in the Ryazan region, he added on Telegram.

An investigation for “terrorist act” launched

The Investigative Committee said it had opened an investigation for a “terrorist act” and the acquisition, transport or storage of explosives.

An employee was slightly injured, the state-owned Russian Railways said earlier, adding that the derailment was due to “the intervention of unauthorized persons”.

Numerous sabotages on railway tracks in Russia have been reported since Moscow launched its offensive against Ukraine in February 2022. On several occasions, Moscow has accused Kiev of being responsible. The authorities have, for the moment, not accused Ukraine of having sponsored Saturday’s derailment.

A fire in a gunpowder factory

Investigators are seeking to establish “all the circumstances of the incident and the people involved in the crime,” said the Investigative Committee, responsible for the main investigations in the country.

Images, published on his Telegram account, show several overturned wagons.

A fire also broke out during the night from Friday to Saturday in a gunpowder factory in the Tambov region, in central Russia.

Explosion sounds

The flames were “quickly extinguished” and caused no casualties, regional authorities said. The causes and circumstances of the fire “are being clarified,” they added.

Several Russian Telegram channels claimed that “explosion sounds” were heard before the fire started, citing witnesses. AFP was unable to verify these statements.

An explosion had already occurred at this factory in June, causing the death of four people. The governor of the Tambov region, Maxime Egorov, assured at the time that it was not an attack.
