Diabetes Rates and Medication Costs on the Rise in the Netherlands

A recent report shows that there are proportionally fewer diabetics in North Holland than in other provinces in the Netherlands. The percentage of diabetics in North Holland is only lower in Utrecht at 5.1%, while the percentage is highest in Drenthe, with 7.4% of residents having been diagnosed with diabetes. Other provinces with relatively high numbers of diabetics include Limburg (7.1%) and Groningen (6.8%).

In North Holland, the municipality with the highest percentage of diabetics is Den Helder, where 7.4% of residents have diabetes. Purmerend is not far behind, with 7.3% of residents affected by the condition. The top 5 municipalities with the most diabetics in North Holland also include Heemskerk, Zaanstad, and Beverwijk and Velsen. Bloemendaal, on the other hand, has the lowest percentage at 3.6%.

However, the cost of diabetes medication has seen a considerable increase in recent years. According to research by Independer, the average cost for someone with type 2 diabetes went up to 93.06 euros in 2022 from 35.57 euros in 2018. This is a significant 161.7% increase. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the condition in the Netherlands, affecting more than 1.1 million people. By contrast, the costs of insulin treatment for type 1 diabetes have generally decreased in price, with an average reimbursement decrease of 14.13% between 2018 and 2022.

The medication costs for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are typically reimbursed by basic insurance. However, for those with type 2 diabetes who do not need to inject insulin at first, they may find their medications covered by their deductible, with potential additional personal contributions varying by insurance provider. Mirjam Prins, a health insurance expert at Independer, advises people to carefully review the conditions before comparing or taking out insurance.
