KD’s New Approach to Family Policy: Extended Parental Insurance

KD, the Christian Democrats, have unveiled a new approach to family policy, with a focus on extending parental insurance. Party leader Ebba Busch explains, “We change the tools to reach the goal.” The party’s program contains 88 points, many of which are aimed at allowing parents to spend more time at home with their children.

In order to achieve this, KD is proposing several changes, including raising the maximum rate in childcare and adjusting the multi-child allowance. The most controversial proposal is the elimination of the childcare allowance, with the funds being redirected to extending parental insurance by six months, from the current 13 months.

However, there are concerns about the high cost of this proposal, estimated at SEK 15 billion gross if fully utilized. Additionally, some critics worry that KD’s proposals directly contradict the government’s efforts to encourage women, especially those with immigrant backgrounds, to enter the labor market.

While KD’s new family policy approach has stirred up debate, it is clear that the party is committed to reshaping the tools and resources available to parents in order to prioritize family time and childcare.
