DECRYPTION – The cost of the most innovative therapies raises many concerns.
In around fifteen years, the treatment of many cancers has been transformed thanks to the development of innovative therapies, such as immunotherapies, cellular therapies or targeted therapies. The understanding of tumor processes has also evolved drastically: cancers are now increasingly categorized according to their genetic specificities rather than by organ. Initially reserved for metastatic pathologies, these innovations now target cancers at less advanced stages, and therefore a larger number of patients. The cost of these treatments is placing an increasing burden on the health system and is causing concern among doctors. The National Academy of Medicine has just released a report on “the problems posed in oncology by new molecules”which points out the limits of the system and suggests avenues for improvement, production evaluation tools.
