Patron Saint of Uruguay

The Virgin of the Thirty-Three is carved from cedar and measures about 36 cm high. It is painted blue, white and gold, and wears a gold crown with precious stones, a gift from Don Manuel Oribe, who would later occupy the position of President of the Republic.

The Virgin of the Thirty-Three was proclaimed “Patron Saint of Uruguay” in 1961 by Pope Saint John XXIII.

“May the entire Church of Uruguay, under your valuable help and example, work tirelessly to implement the Gospel of the Beatitudes, a guarantee of freedom, progress, and peace; promote solidarity with other sister nations, and all Uruguayans live in harmony and concord, conscious of being children of God and brothers in Christ, sealed by the same Spirit, members of the same Church and your children, Mother of the Redeemer” ( Pope Saint John Paul II during his apostolic trip to Uruguay in 1988).
