The hiring table of the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz (Spain) has recommended the award of the contract for the construction of the second phase of the new container terminal in the Cadiz enclave to Acciona Construction. The amount of the contract amounts to 54,686,333.70 euros.

Specifically, the works, which have a completion period of 28 months, will consist of expanding the dock by a length of 510.45 meters. The aforementioned extension of land will result in a docking line of 1,100 meters, with a draft of 16 meters in relation to the port zero.

Thanks to this logistical change, the surface of the esplanade will increase by around ten hectares, thus providing a forty hectare terminal for ‘lo-lo’ container traffic.

It should be noted that the new section of the dock will be composed of thirteen reinforced concrete caissons, with dimensions of 39.5 meters in length, 20.5 meters in depth and 24 meters in width. To support it on the seabed, a dredging process will be carried out until reaching -17.5 meters, followed by the provision of a 1.5 meter high breakwater bench on which the caissons will sit.

The extension will be connected at its southern end to pier number five, also made up of reinforced concrete caissons, but set at a draft of 9.5 meters. As part of these works, it will be necessary to dismantle three caissons at the southern end by refloating them. While on the resulting esplanade, a consolidation treatment of the fills will be carried out. Finally, the work will be completed with the construction of the dock superstructure.

A detail to mention is that the expansion is concessioned to Concasa, which has already been awarded phases 1.2 and 2 of the container terminal. Without a doubt, the project allows us to move one step further towards the relocation of container activity from the Reina Sofía Dock, at the same time as freeing up land for the Port-City operation.

On the other hand, the Port of Cádiz has accepted a total of nine offers submitted to carry out the work corresponding to the second phase of access to the new container terminal in the Andalusian enclave.
