German officials and bureaucracy are inseparable concepts. Where in Germany are officials remembered with a kind word, and where are they scolded for all the world? This can be learned from the results of the new rating of the association for the protection of consumer rights VSVBB. The study is conducted based on the analysis of reviews on the Internet for the fifth time.

So, in 2023, more than 53 thousand reviews from German residents about the work of government officials with the population were analyzed. A total of 354 structures were assessed. The average rating received by all employees this year is the highest in recent years: 3.62 points out of five.

Officials of North Rhine Westphalia are in special regard

Bielefeld took first place in the ranking. Internet users highly appreciated the work of ten government agencies in the city. Average score – 4.11. In second place is Bochum. Both leaders are based in Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia.

But there is no need to rush to conclusions. Not all officials of this federal land were rated so highly by the population. The last lines of the ranking are also occupied by the cities of North Rhine-Westphalia: Mönchengladbach (40th place – last in the ranking), Cologne (39th place), Duisburg (38th place).

How do officials work in the capital?

How do officials work in Berlin? The German capital accounted for the largest number of ratings – almost a quarter. It must be said that the structures that were assessed by citizens are the most numerous here: 43 government agencies for working with the population came to the attention of experts. In the overall rating, Berlin ranks fifth: residents of the capital rated the work of officials at 4.01 points.

Things are much worse in the former capital of Germany – Bonn: this city on the Rhine received 37th place and less than three points.

What conclusions do experts make?

The general conclusion reached by experts from the association for the protection of consumer rights VSVBB is this: in most German cities, residents on average are more often satisfied with the work of government institutions than before, but it is clearly too early to talk about the absence of problems. In addition, many government agencies still do not even read the criticism that users leave on the Internet.

If for any beauty salon such criticism directly affects the number of visitors, then officials simply do not experience such stress: even with a bad rating, people will still have to contact the same department – for lack of an alternative.

However, as the authors of the rating note, the lack of an alternative should not lead to the quality of services available to citizens suffering. By the way, public service centers in Germany have many variant names: Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro, Bürgerdienste. The essence of their work is the same everywhere, but the quality varies.
