The basketball trade magazine “BIG” reported on Monday evening about the first coach dismissal in the Bundesliga. Accordingly, the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim are said to have fired their head coach Nikola Markovic (41) and have already found a successor in Ingo Freyer (most recently Central German BC).

First BBL coach fired!
The Serb came to the small town (36,000 inhabitants) as an assistant coach in the summer of 2022. He previously coached the U19 team of the top Russian club Kuban Krasnodar. After separating from Sebastian Gleim in December, Markovic took over as head coach of the Merlins and led Crailsheim to 13th place in the table – safe relegation. In the summer he signed a one-year contract as a reward.
At the time, sporting director Ingo Enskat said: “He took the helm for our team in a difficult situation and, together with the boys, achieved important victories in the decisive games. We are looking forward to tackling the new season together.”
But things are not going well at Crailsheim this season. After seven games they are in last place in the table with just one win. The new signings have not taken off so far.

The Merlins have already brought in two professionals this season, Leo Westermann and Brandon Childress. They also parted ways with Brevin Pritzl because he did not perform as well as those responsible had hoped.
Still, it didn’t get any better. On Saturday there was a clear 58:96 defeat at Rasta Vechta. Crailsheim was completely overwhelmed by the promoted team’s energy in the second half and had nothing to counter it.

Nikola Markovic said before the game: “At this moment the game is the most important game of the season for us. We are going to Vechta to fight and find a way to win this game together.”
