Peggy Gasche-Müller from Laupheim recently visited the Bernhard Nordkamp Center (BNC) in Namibia again and was able to personally hand over donations of 2,600 euros to the director, MaryBeth Gallagher. She has been traveling there for many years and always finds out about the good that has been done with the donations. The donations are collected throughout the year through campaigns such as cake sales in Laupheim, drinks sales at the Advent bazaar in Schemmerhofen and personal contacts in order to deliver them on the upcoming trip.
Brigitte Lämmle from Ingerkingen, who has also been able to visit the BNC several times, also reports that the OMI mission procurator in Borken was able to transfer 3,000 euros in donations for the children’s center last year. Donating via the Missionsprokur makes it possible to receive donation certificates; Namibian certificates are not recognized in Germany.
Many people knew Father Nordkamp, the founder, personally and know how much he cared about the children in Namibia. Father Bernhard Nordkamp was rector and pastor of the former Oblate monastery in Schemmerhofen. In 2007 he organized a trip to Namibia for the Schemmerhofen pastoral care unit. The participants on this trip have been supporting this project ever since.
The BNC is now striving to compensate for the shortcomings of the Namibian public education system and motivates students in grades 1-7 to get good school leaving certificates.
It welcomes over 170 children every afternoon and offers the children safety, nutrition, education, sports activities, play time and lots of positive social interactions. The BNC is located in the Katutura district. The residents there live in poor conditions and their homes mostly consist of corrugated iron huts. The BNC offers a safe place. Families do not incur any costs for the services and work materials, but children are required to be present. Discipline, respectful interaction and politeness are also required.
