President Julio Casares received tribute from the São Paulo City Council, this Monday (13), in a formal session at Palácio Anchieta. The Anchieta Medal – the chamber’s highest honor – and the Diploma of Gratitude from the city of São Paulo were awarded.
The session was chaired by councilor Fabio Riva (PSDB), government leader in the chamber and author of the proposal; and there was a panel formed by Cacá Vianna, municipal secretary of Sports and Leisure of São Paulo, Edson Marcusso, mayor of Boituva, Ives Gandra Martins, president of the Advisory Council of São Paulo FC and a great jurist in the country’s history, Mauro Silva, vice- president of the São Paulo Football Federation, and Julinho Casares, son of the president, representing the honoree’s family.
Casares received the honor to the sound of the São Paulo FC anthem, performed by the Metropolitan Civil Guard band. The session ended with a performance by the Dragões da Real samba school.
The tribute speeches began with Julinho Casares, who mentioned: “We learn every day from him. I closely follow the work he does, and it’s not easy. I’m very proud of him.”
Next, it was the turn of Ives Gandra Martins, who received a standing ovation from the camera. “I know the extraordinary work that Julio Casars has done for the club. When he said he would run for president and asked for my support, I immediately accepted. Since he assumed the presidency, São Paulo FC has once again become a protagonist. With all the titles that São Paulo FC already had, the Copa do Brasil was missing, and that’s what we achieved. Julio Casares represents modernity in football. As member number 14 and as dean among the advisors, I would like to say that this is an extraordinary man. This is a great recognition that the city gives to those who do for it,” he said.
Edson Marcusso pointed out: “Almost 25 years ago, Julio became the owner of a space in Boituva, and since then he has always been helping. The Boituva community had to be represented here.”
Cacá Vianna followed with the tribute: “São Paulo FC is the champion team, and also the most popular. We know what São Paulo FC represents. People speak very fondly of you. We know the love you have for the club, but you also have professionalism. You have been an incentive for São Paulo FC to grow not only on the field. You are from the East Zone, and it is proof that the East Zone also has great São Paulo people. I’m happy to be here today as a São Paulo native and as municipal secretary of Sports and Leisure.”
Finally, Fabio Riva ended the panel’s speeches and gave the floor to the honoree. “The Anchieta Medal is the chamber’s highest honor for a person who has provided great services to the city. And it needs to be voted on and approved by two-thirds of the councilors here in this plenary,” he explained. “I met Julio on the Dragoes da Real court. It was a happy friendship. There we talked about politics, the City Council and São Paulo FC. You, Julio, weren’t even a candidate for president of the club yet. Here, in this space, the city’s most important decisions take place. Now, you become part of the select list of those who have the Anchieta Medal, your responsibility increases as a citizen, and I am sure you will live up to that”, he concluded.
After receiving the tributes, Julio Casares took the floor and also had his speech given a standing ovation by the chamber.
“I have had many emotions in my life, but I was extremely emotional here. I’m here with great happiness. I came from Parada XV de Novembro, a little after Itaquera. And God was very generous to me. There are many fans from other clubs there, but God put his hand on me and made me a São Paulo fan”, he pointed out.
“I had to start working very early. I spent time here at this house, when I was still young. Studying, I became a radio presenter, lawyer and teacher. I did everything with great joy and humility. At São Paulo FC I was a guy in the stands, and I was satisfied . I was a marketing volunteer. Today we are recovering the dignity of São Paulo FC. The institution is in the process of reconstruction. We must always be working”, he continued.
“I will try to honor this medal, as I have done in life for 62 years. This medal is very special, but it will also represent 20 million fans, and also to all those who like sport, even if they are not our fans. At this moment I I see that boy in the back. This love for our team is our first love; and this love is the reason for a parliament, for a management, which is to make São Paulo FC the most popular club in Brazil.”, he concluded the president.
