Houston Man Hailed as Hero for Saving Injured Officer during Shootout

HOUSTON – A Houston man is being praised for his quick thinking and bravery after coming to the aid of an injured Houston police officer during a shootout with a carjacking suspect.

John Lally was driving on U.S.59 near Chimney Rock on Saturday when he found himself in the middle of a shootout between HPD and the suspect. Lally witnessed Officer John Gibson, 29, being shot in the leg.

“I saw him get shot, and I knew he got shot because he buckled to the ground, then he tried to stand back up and then buckled again,” Lally recounted to KPRC 2.

Lally immediately jumped into action, pulling Officer Gibson to safety and comforting him until medical help arrived.

“I said I want to let you know you’re going to be OK, the officer already put a tourniquet on your leg,” Lally said. “I knew he was going through pain, and I know when you’re going through that type of pain, just somebody talking to you and being there with you and just holding your hand is probably going to take your mind off a lot of that stuff.”

Lally also revealed that the intense shootout lasted about 10 minutes, with the carjacking suspect ultimately being shot multiple times and dying at the scene.

The grateful hero expressed his willingness to help again if necessary, stating, “I hope that I wouldn’t have to do it again, but if I had to I will and I encourage anybody that can help anybody to continue to help people.”

Officer Gibson is expected to make a full recovery, and Lally’s selfless actions have earned him the praise and gratitude of the community.
