An unusual story. A Belgian plane leaving New York had to make an emergency U-turn on Thursday, November 9 to return to John F. Kennedy International Airport because of… a horse. According to several American media, the horse transported in the hold of a cargo plane managed to break away and escape from its box.

Citing an air traffic control recording, the television channel ABC News reported that the horse managed to break away within half an hour of takeoff, when the plane was already at around 9,500 m altitude, according to the site FlightRadar24.

A recording during which the pilot of the Air Atlanta Icelandic Boeing 747 requests authorization to urgently return to New York for security reasons.

“We can’t tie up the horse”

“We are a cargo plane with a live animal, a horse, on board. The horse managed to escape from his stall. “There’s no problem flying, but we have to turn back to New York because we can’t reattach the horse,” a recording posted on YouTube.

In this recording, the pilot is also heard requesting that a veterinarian be present for the landing. In total, the plane dropped around twenty tonnes of fuel over the Atlantic before returning to its starting point.

Air Atlanta Icelandic, the airline operating the flight, has not released any official statement on the incident. After making an emergency landing, the plane was then able to take off again to arrive in Liège, Belgium, the following morning, according to data from the specialized site FlightRadar24.
