It is reported that the monument of Stepan Shaumyan, a representative of the Russian Bolshevik Party, was demolished in Khankendi.

Information and photos about this have been published on social networks.

Stepan Shaumyan, an ally of the leader of the Russian Communist Party, Vladimir Lenin, was appointed by him in December 1917 as the Extraordinary Commissar for Caucasian Affairs. In March 1918, armed groups subordinate to the Baku Soviet led by Shaumyan committed massacres against Azerbaijanis in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba and other eastern regions of Azerbaijan. According to historical data, tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis were killed in these massacres.

In August 1918, the Baku Council of People’s Commissars headed by Shaumyan was abolished and its commissars were arrested by the unrecognized Menshevik (Socialist Revolutionary Party-ed) government of the “Centrokaspian Dictatorship”. In September 1918, Baku commissars were taken to the city of Krasnovodsk and shot in the deserts of Turkmenistan.

After the establishment of the Soviet power in Azerbaijan and the creation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Province, the city of Khankendi was named “Stepanakert” in honor of Stepan Shahumyan.

It should be noted that in 2009, the “26 Baku Commissioners” monument complex was demolished in Baku and the remains of their bodies were buried in the city cemetery.
