Title: Disease Prevention Office warns of diarrhea outbreak in Nakhon Si Thammarat

The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is warning the public to be careful of diarrhea, especially in school-age children. The office recommends adhering to the principles of “eat cooked, hot, clean” to prevent the spread of food and water-borne diseases.

Dr. Kraisorn Tothapthiang, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 11, stated that with schools reopening for the semester, students will be gathering in groups to participate in activities. This increases the risk of contamination if the food, water, or ice is not clean. Additionally, the humid and cool weather provides an ideal environment for various germs to grow, particularly norovirus and rotavirus, which can cause severe diarrhea in young children and the elderly.

The Health Zone 11 reported a total of 41,835 cases of acute diarrhea from January to November 2023, with the most affected age groups being 0-4 years, 5-9 years, and 15-24 years. Phuket Province has the highest rate of illness per 100,000 people and has seen a trend of increasing cases each year.

Diarrhea is a disease transmitted through contaminated food and water, and symptoms include stomach pain, loose diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. The office recommends initial treatment with a mineral salt solution (ORS) to prevent dehydration and seeking medical attention if symptoms do not improve or worsen.

To prevent the spread of diarrhea, individuals are advised to adhere to the principle of “eat cooked, hot, clean.” This includes consuming freshly cooked food, thoroughly heating previously stored food, and practicing proper hand hygiene. Additionally, it is recommended to consume clean drinking water and ice with standard certification marks or drink boiled water.

The public is encouraged to contact the Department of Disease Control hotline at 1422 for more information on preventing diarrhea and maintaining good hygiene practices.
