Corona and the unusual World Cup date ensure larger squads at recent tournaments. At the European Championships in Germany in 2024, the old personnel rule applies again – also for national coach Nagelsmann.

Frankfurt/Main.

Julian Nagelsmann has to limit himself compared to his predecessors Joachim Löw and Hansi Flick – at least when it comes to personnel selection.

While the national coaches were able to appoint 26 players to their squad for the 2021 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, the number of players for the 2024 European Championship will be reduced again to the once usual number of 23 professionals. This emerges from the UEFA regulations for the tournament from June 14th to July 14th, 2024.

At the last continental tournament to date, a good two years ago, the squad size was increased by three players in order to be able to compensate for possible corona failures. The pandemic still played a role at the World Cup in Qatar a year ago, as did the high stress on the players with the unusual date in late autumn in the middle of the season of the top European leagues.

Final squad must be registered by June

Nagelsmann had initially nominated 26 players in his debut squad for the USA trip in October, and he had even named 27 players for the upcoming European Championship tests on Saturday against Turkey in Berlin and three days later in Vienna against Austria. After the absences of Malick Thiaw and Chris Führich, he still has 25 players available, including Mats Hummels, who is suffering from back problems.

However, Nagelsmann had already announced that he would “reduce” his squad size for the first two test games in March – probably against the Netherlands and France.

The 36-year-old will probably be named to his European Championship squad shortly before the last Bundesliga game on May 18th. The final squad must be reported to UEFA by midnight on June 7th at the latest. Two days later, the DFB team moves into the European Championship quarters in Herzogenaurach. The group games will take place on June 14th in Munich, on June 19th in Stuttgart and on June 23rd in Frankfurt. (dpa)
