Dengue epidemic in Burkina: A union points to the responsibility of the IMF and the World Bank

Ouagadougou, November 15, 2023 (AIB) – The Union of Human and Animal Health Workers (Syntsha) associates the difficulties linked to the dengue epidemic currently raging in Burkina Faso with the structural adjustment policies imposed, according to it, by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, in a declaration signed this Wednesday, November 15 in Ouagadougou and consulted by the AIB.

“Our health system is in an advanced state of degradation as a result of antisocial policies resulting from the structural adjustment programs underway in our country under the diktat of the great imperialist powers through their financial institutions which are the International Monetary Fund and the Bank Worldwide,” indicated the general secretary of the Union of Human and Animal Health Workers (Syntsha), Bernard Sanon, author of the declaration.

The union denounced the health system in Burkina, describing it as “bourgeois” and “reactionary” in nature and condemned the structural adjustment programs and their corollaries, “notably the disengagement of the State from substantial financing of social sectors basic, health, education, etc.

He also pointed out the political responsibility of the country’s authorities.

Conversely, Syntsha welcomed the free rapid screening tests for dengue decided by the Transitional government; a decision that he considers “salutary” but which in his opinion deserves to be followed by substantial support measures.

Dengue disease caused 421 reported deaths, in the space of January 1 to November 5, 2023. The union recalls that this number is higher than that of all cumulative cases of deaths associated with Covid-19 in Burkina Faso and deserves consequently a national mobilization.

Finally, Syntsha praised the commitment of health workers in the fight against this epidemic and the commitment of the forces fighting for the return of security to the country.

Reported in 1925 in Burkina Faso for the first time, dengue fever has proven to be more worrying this year, with more than 42,500 probable cases already recorded, including many fatal cases, pushing the government to organize and intensify the response.
